Spending this year’s holidays in Santa Fe, aka ‘City Different,’ was definitely a different experience for me. At ~7,000 feet above sea level, Santa Fe—the highest and oldest state capital in the U.S., built upon Spanish and Pueblo history—fills me with nostalgia as church bells and Christmas carols echo while I walk under the moonlight on Canyon Road’s mile stretch of art galleries. Sipping wassail by bonfires, I’m surrounded by the glow of farolitos (paper lanterns) lining adobe rooftops and narrow paths.

Some places explored included Canyon Road for the farolito walk and art galleries, Santa Fe Plaza, the State Capitol, Cross of the Martyrs, the Railyard artisan market and farmers market (where I caught an amazing fiery sunset), the Santa Fe River Walk along De Vargas Park, the Palace of the Governors at New Mexico History Museum, the Georgia O’Keeffe Museum, the Loretto Chapel with its staircase, the Cathedral Basilica of St. Francis of Assisi, San Miguel Chapel, the Museum of International Folk Art, and the Arnold & Doris Roland Sculpture Garden.
